In the distance, there is a light. A light shining from the mansion. And we follow it like a star to find our way out of the forest. The sun grips the horizon, and peeks its head over, slowly pulling itself up as we walk through the grass. We pass the farmland with its rows of crops. But that’s not all that is there. Long, opaque shadows stretch across the field like tears in the fabric of the landscape. I stand on the edge of a shadow and touch its surface. The shadow writhes. It is as cold as metal.

“It’s asleep,” Father says.

“Can you see into it? Do you know whose memory this is?”

“No,” he says. “It is all darkness to me. I’m no different from the ghosts.”

We keep walking, and there are more impenetrable shadows, standing in various shapes. They cover the homes of the ghosts. They cover patches of the farmland. The shadows contrast greatly with the details and colors of the material world. They don’t react to the wind or the light. They offer nothing to the senses but coldness. I know why it is so quiet. The ghosts have run away. They are hiding.
